Resource Sharing Q and A

What is Resource Sharing?

Resource Sharing, or interlibrary loan, allows the borrowing and lending of books from one SUNY library to another. If an item is unavailable through SUNY, it may be available from another participating library.

Who can use Resource Sharing/Interlibrary loan?

CGCC students who are currently enrolled in credit courses; and current faculty, staff, and emeriti.

How do I make a request for something through Resource Sharing?

  • Sign into Primo using your college email address.

  • Search for the item you are looking for using the “Everything” search.

  • If it is not found, use the drop-down menu to select SUNY Catalog and click search again. Make sure you “Sign in to get complete results and request items”

  • If the item is found, click “Check for available services” and then “Resource Sharing”. This will open a pre-populated form.

  • Click “Send Request”.  You should see the following message: “Your request was successfully placed”.

Is there a fee?

There is no fee for resource sharing through SUNY.  Most libraries participating in interlibrary loan do not charge a fee. If a fee is required, we will contact you before the request is filled.

How long can I borrow an item?

SUNY resource sharing for borrowing books is 16 weeks, or 30 days for selected media or special collection items.  For participating libraries outside of the SUNY system, the borrowing period is determined by the lending library, and therefore varies.

How long will it take?

A requested book generally takes one week to arrive, but this can vary. Electronically delivered articles often arrive in a day or two.  You will be notified when your items have arrived.

Where do I pick up and return requested items?

Your items can be picked up at the circulation desk. Books must be returned at the circulation desk or in the 24-hour book drop at the main building's entrance.

Can I renew a book?

You can request renewals through your Primo account. Click on your name and then select “My Loans”. Select the item you would like to renew. A SUNY Resource Sharing request allows for up to 3 additional 16-week renewals and 1 additional renewal for short loan items. Outside lending libraries decide whether or not you can renew an item. It is best to request a renewal through our library a few days prior to the due date.  If you have questions, please contact us at 518-697-6390 or by email.
