CE 101 - College Experience: Library FAQ

A guide for the College Experience course that will introduce students to the functions of the library.

How do I get a library card?

If you have a current student ID, you already have a library card. You just need to come in and have us activate it at the checkout desk. The process takes a couple of minutes.

Do you have my textbooks?

The library does not collect textbooks used in classes at C-GCC. The college's virtual bookstore sells textbooks.

In a few cases, professors have placed copies of textbooks used in their classes in either our reserve collection, at the Student Support Center, or both. In most cases, textbooks on reserve are library use only.

Are food and drink allowed in the library?

You can bring in a snack and a beverage in a sealed container.

I have a class that meets online. Can I use the library and attend class from my laptop?

Absolutely! We have plenty of seating areas with power outlets that you can use to attend class virtually. We even have a couple of rooms you can use if you and a friend or two are attending the same class online.

Do you have anything other than books?

Yes! We have audiobooks (books on CD), DVDs of documentaries, and movies, including foreign, classic titles and stuff you might want to watch over the weekend. In addition, we have online access to streaming video of documentaries. We also have magazines and newspapers that you can read in the library. You can find DVDs, magazines and newspapers on our first floor.

You can learn about our collections and how to use them through our Library Skills class, a free self-paced online course offered each semester. Some professors offer extra credit for completing the course. Come by the library for more information.

How many items can I borrow?

We limit patrons to 3 items per subject area or author, up to a maximum of 25 items. Patrons are limited to 2 DVDs and audiobooks.

Do you have computers? WiFi?

Yes to both questions! We have 14 desktop computers on our first floor with full Internet access, Microsoft Office 2013 and printing capability. You don't need to log in or check in with us. Just come in and get to work! We also have WiFi on both floors of the library. You can search our catalog and databases from a laptop computer, tablet or your smartphone. Charging areas are located throughout the library.

How can I access the databases from home?

To access our online resources, you must sign in with your C-GCC email address and password.

How much does it cost to print?

Printing is free! That said, please minimize wasteful printing. If you need help, such as printing a PowerPoint, please ask one of our friendly staff members.

Can I print from my laptop/mobile device?

At this time, we do not have that kind of capability. If you need to print something from a portable device, email the document to yourself, then get on one of our desktop computers, open the email, and print it. If you have a flash drive, save the item on that drive, then use one of our desktop machines and print it up.

Do you have color printing? Double-sided printing?

We do not have color printing. However, we do have double-sided printing! Please see a staff member for assistance with double-sided printing.

I need a job. Do you hire students?

Yes! We have a couple of spots available for student aides each semester. Contact Reference Librarian John Santana for details.

Is the library on social media?

Yes! The Columbia-Greene Community College Library is on Facebook. Like and follow our page (link is below) to learn about displays, treasures from our collections, events, and even video tutorials that teach you how to use our electronic databases. The library also has a YouTube channel featuring tutorials.
