Welcome to the Columbia-Greene Library guide to artificial intelligence (AI). In this guide we'll explore what AI is, how it came to be, share some AI sites, and how to cite AI tools in your work. Visit this site often, as new content will be added as AI develops.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, Artificial Intelligence, commonly referred to as AI, is "The capacity of computers or other machines to exhibit or simulate intelligent behaviour ... software used to perform tasks or produce output previously thought to require human intelligence, esp. by using machine learning to extrapolate from large collections of data."
One of the most common types of AI is generative artificial intelligence, commonly called generative AI, which the Oxford English Dictionary defines as "Artificial intelligence designed to produce output, esp. text or images, previously thought to require human intelligence, typically by using machine learning to extrapolate from large collections of data; (also) a system, piece of software, etc., used to create content in this way."
