Evaluating Wikipedia: Getting Tougher

This interactive guide will help students evaluate Wikipedia entries for possible incorrect information, which will serve as examples as to why Wikipedia is not acceptable for college research.

Find the Mistake

Wikipedia pranksters may not always use the main body of the entry to pull a hoax. Sometimes they'll amend the info box (a box listing brief information about the subject) for the sake of a laugh.

The following is a screencap of the info box for the Portland Timbers professional soccer team. Look at it and try to find where (or if) a prankster struck.

Did you notice anything awry? Look carefully.

The "Owner" of the Portland Timbers is listed as the Seattle Sounders. You can probably guess who they are, but never assume. Always check for accurate information. A credible online source is located here

So what's the story behind this prank?  During a 2021 match in Portland, Oregon, Seattle defeated the Timbers 6-2, a blowout by soccer standards. An exuberant Seattle fan edited the Timbers Wikipedia entry claiming that the Sounders "owned" the Timbers by winning by such a large margin on Portland's turf. The prankster than proceeded to share the image in a Seattle Sounders online fan group.

Take another look at the screencap. Did you notice that the lettering for things like the Timbers' stadium, chairman, coach, and league are all in blue text? That's because the blue text on any web page represents a hyperlink you can click on. In the screencap above, the text for "Seattle Sounders" is in black. That implies that there isn't a Wikipedia entry for the Seattle Sounders. A simple Google search will prove otherwise.
