Welcome to the Columbia-Greene Community College Library guide to Information Ethics and Combating Misinformation. This guide is designed to assist everyone interested in learning more about combating online misinformation and the ethics involved in using information. This guide includes links to helpful resources, videos, a list of available print books on this subject, and more.
First, it would be helpful to begin with definitions of terms commonly used in this guide, as well as in online life.
Misinformation can be defined as false information that is disseminated, regardless of its intent to mislead others.
Disinformation is misinformation that is deliberately disseminated to mislead others.
Fake News is false information, often of a sensational nature, that mimics news media content. These sites often publish unsubstantiated claims, with a clear partisan slant. A recent survey found that 76 of those surveyed globally worry about fake news being used as a weapon. Misinformation and disinformation are more common online, and in social media, then fake news.
